KNOW THOU THE GOD OF THY FATHER?
David served his generation according to the will of God, he had done a great deal of service to his fellow men; his time of departure was near, he therefore called on his beloved son and charged him to know the God of his father. Can you boldly tell your children to serve your God? Peradventure you are still being forced to serve God or you are still in doubt of God and His Salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ? I urge you to know the only True God and serve Him with a pure heart. Be happy to serve him, because the LORD knows what is in everyone's heart. He knows what you are thinking. If you go to Him for help, you will get an answer. But if you turn away from Him, He will leave you forever (2 Chronicles 28:9).
David had called on Solomon; he wanted him to carry on the work he had begun. His deepest concern was that Solomon be a faithful servant of God and do the special work which awaited his care. He realized Solomon needed to know many truths if he was to successfully rule over Israel. He needed to learn all he could about the affairs of state, know where to turn for counsel and advice, to know whom he could trust and on whom not to turn his back; but, more than anything else, he needed to know God. We need to know much too, but the most important truth to know is God.
Solomon needed to know that God is holy, pure, ever-present, and all-observing. He needed to know He claims our reverence, love, obedience, and submission. He needed to know He condemns our ingratitude, our departure from Himself, and our sin. He needed to know He is ready to receive, forgive, and restore all who return in penitence and faith. How can we as children of God know these truths? The best way is on our own. We must study our Bibles and see Him in nature. Parents, can you give this same advise David gave to Solomon to your children? What would they know about your God? Would they conclude your God is gold, your job, recreation, or your family? If your children knew your God, would it prepare them for eternity? May God help you to be able to say to your children, and say it without fear, “Know thou the God of thy father.”
God deserves our service. Think of all He has done for you (James 1:17; Matthew 7:11). He gave you Christ on the cross, gave you a plan of salvation. He gives you all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3), the hope of eternal life, good health and minds. Truly, God is worthy of our service. So how are you to serve Him? You are to serve God with a perfect heart. This means you are to serve Him with a heart that is attuned to His will, not to give half-hearted service. So many people have tried to hold on to God with one hand and the world with the other, do not be like them - 1 John 2:15–17; James 4:4. You may live to regret many decisions in life, but one decision you will never regret is the amount of time, money, and talents you have expended in the Lord’s service.
