WATCH YOUR WORDS

WATCH YOUR WORDS

A man may do a great deal of good, or a great deal of hurt, both to others and to himself, according to the use he makes of his tongue. Such has been his own death by a foul tongue or the death of others by a false tongue; and, on the contrary, someone also has saved his own life, or procured the comfort of it, by a prudent gentle tongue, and saved the lives of others by a seasonable testimony or intercession for them. And, if by our words we must be justified or condemned, death and life are, no doubt, in the power of the tongue.

The mouth, the tongue, and the lips are all mechanisms of speech mentioned often by Solomon. They are parts of the body designed by the Lord to help us communicate our thoughts. However, words, in the broadest sense of meaning, take many forms; but whatever their form, they provide the medium through which information is transmitted. Information initiates successful endeavour. In the book of Genesis, we are told that the Lord spoke and the various parts of the world came into existence. How this happened, no one knows. We do know that the creation of the various life forms in the world occurs by means of molecular words within the chromosomes of the cells in the body. Moreover, all of our activity, mental or physical, occurs through the transmission of electrochemical words in the nerves; and it is by means of spoken and printed symbols we gain knowledge and understanding making us capable of constructive endeavour.

Solomon said words have great power for both good and evil (Proverbs18:21). James also wrote of their power: If we put bits into the mouths of horses that they may obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Look at the ships also; though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So the tongue is a little member and boasts of great things (James 3:3-5). If one has wisdom his words will help him; and with them he can help others (Proverbs 10:13, 20, 21; Ecclesiastes 10:12). If one has enough wisdom, he can use them to understand even the inner thoughts of people (Proverbs 18:4). If one uses his words skillfully he can earn a living by them; as many people do (Proverbs 12:14; 13:2; 18:20). If one is a fool, his words will hurt him because he will not know how to use their power (Proverbs 14:3; 18:6, 7). Words well spoken can be very beautiful, bringing joy and happiness (see Proverbs 15:26; 24:26; 25:11, 12).

Words well spoken are good words, pleasant and gracious. They refresh the soul, increase persuasiveness and make important people our friends. They are even good for our health. As every health professional knows, soft, gentle words have remarkable healing power (Proverbs 12:25; 15:1, 4, 30; 16:21; 22:11; 25:25; 27:9). We can conclude that your life is a reflection of your tongues; how you have use your tongue can be seen through the life you live. What you say to the hearing of God consciously or not that He will do. Be careful in what you say.

Word Affirmation: “And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath." - Deuteronomy 28:13 (Don't just say it, mean it!)
