THE DAY OF THE LORD’S FAVOUR (1)
THE DAY OF THE LORD’S FAVOUR (1)
In this passage, we witness a profound moment in the ministry of Jesus. He stands in the synagogue, reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, and then makes a stunning announcement: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” With these words, Jesus declared that the long-awaited "Day of the Lord’s Favour" had arrived. What does this mean for us today? And how can we understand the implications of this powerful statement in the context of our lives?
The term "the Lord’s favour" refers to a special season of grace, a period when God actively reaches out to humanity to offer salvation, mercy, and deliverance. In Jesus' time, the people of Israel had been waiting for the Messiah—the anointed one promised by God who would set things right and bring in a new era. Jesus was making it clear that He was that Messiah, and that the fulfilment of God's promises was happening through Him.
But the Day of the Lord’s Favour is not just a one-time event restricted to the past. It is an ongoing reality. When Jesus declared the year of the Lord’s favour, He was inaugurating a new period in human history—an age of grace that continues until today. We now live in the period of God's favour, where His grace is extended to all who come to Him in faith. This is a time when the doors of salvation are open wide, and the invitation to experience God's love and mercy is freely given.
When we speak of the favour of God, we often think of blessings and good things happening in our lives. However, the favour of God goes much deeper. It is not merely about material prosperity or favourable circumstances. God's favour is about His divine grace working in our lives, transforming us from the inside out.
1. Salvation and Deliverance: God's favour begins with salvation. Jesus came to proclaim release for the captives. This is not just about physical captivity but speaks to our bondage to sin. We are all born into the captivity of sin, but through Jesus, we are set free. The favour of God is most profoundly expressed in His desire to rescue us from spiritual death and give us eternal life.
2. Healing and Restoration: In Luke 4:18, Jesus also speaks of recovery of sight to the blind and setting the oppressed free. God's favour brings healing, both physically and spiritually. In Jesus, we find restoration for our souls, and we experience His power to heal our deepest wounds, whether they be physical ailments, emotional traumas, or spiritual brokenness.
3. Transformation and Empowerment: God's favour transforms us. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, we are made new creations. His favour empowers us to live lives that reflect His glory. It is the ongoing work of sanctification, where we are progressively conformed to the image of Christ.
Word Affirmation: “ For he says, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. - Nehemiah 8:10 KJV" (Don't just say it, mean it!)
“The Day of the Lord’s Favour is a reminder that God’s grace knows no bounds and is accessible to all who seek Him. "
