BE BETTER THAN OTHERS

Values determine our behaviour. What we consider to be most valuable receives the greater amount of our time. Life is filled with choices determined by our values. It is by those values that we gauge our action or the actions of others. This is how we determine the worth that we place upon the various ideas and actions of life. A person with proper values is apt to make the proper choices. Our influence needs to be carefully analyzed. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.” The influence of salt or light is known by all. You cannot hide or disguise the effects of either. You have an influence in the world around you. Jesus urges you to use it positively. We are to use our influence so men may “see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

Jesus demands the proper attitude. Attitudes determine relationships. Attitudes are reflected in words and actions. Jesus stated this truth in this passage. “Do not be ‘angry without cause.’ Do not make idle threats. Do not use harsh or unkind language toward those who are your brethren,” He said. We have an obligation to deal fairly with those whom we have wronged. If therefore you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, and go your way, first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering (Matthew 5:23, 24). We are the ones responsible. It is not what others may do or what circumstances may prevail. The responsibility is ours. We must solve the problem! Do not stay angry! Leave your gift and be reconciled to your brother.

A change in values demands an emphasis on honesty, an honesty that is so real that all we need to do is say “yes” or “no.” It is not necessary that a Christian use oaths. It is not necessary for him to swear by anything. His word is good. Jesus gives us the freedom to do more. “More than is required” should be the motto of every Christian. Go the second mile, give the extra coat, turn the other cheek and let your willingness to do more be seen by all. You are to show compassion even to those who do not deserve it. “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” In other words, be better than others. God expects more of you. You are part of the kingdom of God, the family of God, and as a citizen of His kingdom, as a child of the King, you should have higher standards of living than others. Values are so all pervasive! They include every aspect of our lives. But to be a citizen of the kingdom, my values must be changed to meet the standards of the kingdom.
