Be Not Faithless, But Believing

Be Not Faithless, But Believing

In John 20:24–29, Thomas, also known as Didymus, missed the initial appearance of Jesus to the disciples. When they told him, “We have seen the Lord,” Thomas replied with doubt: “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails… I will not believe.” Eight days later, Jesus appeared again—this time with Thomas present. He did not rebuke Thomas harshly but invited him gently: “Reach hither thy finger… be not faithless, but believing” (John 20:27). Jesus met Thomas right where he was—in the depth of his doubt—and transformed it into a testimony of faith.

Thomas’ journey mirrors that of many believers today. Faith is not always instant; sometimes it wrestles with the visible and logical. Yet, Christ is patient with the sincere doubter. Jesus’ appearance was not merely about proving a point; it was a personal encounter meant to lift Thomas out of unbelief. And Thomas responded with one of the most profound confessions in Scripture: “My Lord and my God.” When doubt is surrendered to Christ’s presence, it often gives way to deeper conviction and clearer revelation than before. In that moment, Thomas moved from seeing wounds to seeing divinity.

Jesus then declared, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” (John 20:29). This blessing extends to all believers today—those who have not physically seen Jesus but believe in His death and resurrection. Faith, in the biblical sense, is trust in the unseen, confidence in the eternal, and rest in the invisible hand of God. “Be not faithless, but believing” is a call to let go of the need for constant proof and to step into the peace of trust. Faith pleases God (Hebrews 11:6), and through faith, we see more than eyes could ever show.

Word Affirmation: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word… in God I have put my trust.” - Psalm 56:3–4 (KJV) (Don't just say it, mean it!)

"Faith begins where sight ends, and blessed are those who believe without seeing."
